He has one hell of a job. I cannot see much hope for local tourism with the price of petrol / diesel set to exceed $1.50 / litre. Most people will need to just keep their petrol for daily trips to the supermarket, or driving to work. Like probably a large number of people, I found that it was cheaper to go for a holiday to Hong Kong / China for 2 weeks, than it was to go to Central Australia. I bet it would be cheaper to go to Fiji for a week, than it would be to drive around Victoria for a week staying at reasonable motels. God forbid ever considering buying a camper van, as the cost of a reasonable van, plus stupid amounts of petrol towing it, would cover overseas trips, each for a couple of weeks, for many years.
I am surprised that there is a call for tourism in Australia these days as Grant of Brisbane rightly points out…It is much cheaper to go overseas than travel around Australia. I wondered whatever happened to those alternative fuels to petrol we heard so much about….Governments have to start supporting different concepts to petrol if we are ever to feel comfortable travelling 4000 or 5000 miles that we used to as younger people……I know that petrol costs definitely stop me from using the car and “going shopping” least of all to another State!
Good luck with your new tourism minister, Big Fella Tours….don’t forget to hassle him for alternative fuels for the future! In twenty years time, some one may come up with a plan!
